Dancing on the Earth with Shizuno Nasu
Creative Dance Classes Return to Volcano Art Center

Volcano, HI – Volcano Art Center celebrates creative dance with internationally renowned and classically trained dance artist Shizuno Nasu. The exuberant praise for Nasu’s 2011 spring dance and movement classes was the only prompting needed for Volcano Art Center to collaborate with her on a new summer series to begin in June.

“Watching Shizuno dance is pure magic; she always takes my breath away,” stated Volcano Art Center CEO Tanya Aynessazian. “We are delighted she has created this new series for us. ‘Dancing on the Earth’ promises to be our most enchanting class this summer.”

Each class will begin with warm-up stretches to provide conditioning, balance and vitality for physical health. The focus will then transition to learning expressive dance movements based on Hara Tanden chi energy theory. These Asian techniques inspired by the wind, water and fire energies increase concentration and enlightenment of the spirit through fluid motion and relaxation.

Dancing on the Earth with Shizuno Nasu is a four-part series that begins on Saturday, June 2. Subsequent classes will be held July 7, August 4 and September 1. All classes are open to all levels – including beginners and non-dancers – and will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Tuition is $45 or $40.50 for VAC members for each session. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. CONCEPT

Spirit and Nature – the movement of wind, the stark land of Pele, the interweaving energies of opposites, yin and yang. We must heal the earth with renewed spirit and awareness of the interconnectedness of all beings and elements.

PROFILE

SHIZUNO NASU was born in Osaka, Japan and began her classical ballet training at age three.
She was chosen as an exchange student with the Bolshoi Ballet at age seven and made her debut as a professional dancer at age 19.
She has won high praise in France, Germany, Italy, Greece, India, South Korea, China, Japan and the U.S.
Shizuno’s quest for her own stylistic voice led her to study old Japanese mythological dances.
She undertook a multi-year pilgrimage, performing in every prefecture of Japan, and deepening within her the skill and spirit of mai, the dance.
Beyond the influence of both the West and the East, Shizuno continues to refine her unique mai, a dance attuned to the rhythms of Mother Nature.
Her most recent and successful stage production, “Pele and Poliahu” (‘09 & ‘10), showed her passion for and inspiration in movement and nature.
Shizuno says “Spirit and Nature can be seen in the movement of wind, the stark land of Pele, and the interweaving energies of opposites, yin and yang…
We must heal the earth with renewed spirit and awareness of the interconnectedness of all beings and elements.”
She currently resides in Volcano, on the Island of Hawai'i, where she continues to generate new Spiral Visions, teach dance, and aspires to bring cultures together through international cultural exchange.
