Japanese Artist Reemerges in Hawaii to Honor the Earth
Volcano Art Center PresentsSusumu Sakaguchi’s
First Solo Show in Hawaii

Volcano, HI – Japanese-born contemporary artist Susumu Sakaguchi <http://susumusakaguchi.com/> is about to make a big splash in the Big Island art scene. Bringing his unique style of “Metamorphosis Perception Painting” not seen in Hawaii since a 2008 idspace exhibition <http://www.hiartmagazine.com/idspace/Past%20Exhibits/Susumu%20Sakaguchi/Susumu%20Sakaguchi%201-08.htm> , Sakaguchi returns June 18 with his first statewide solo show at Volcano Art Center <http://www.volcanoartcenter.org/> .

Perhaps since it’s been so long or perhaps he simply has so much to say with the works on display, Sakaguchi’s exhibit carries three distinct and equally poignant titles: Earth is Born, Time of Crisis and Peace and Center of Universe.

“The last thing we think about is our Earth,” says Sakaguchi. “We are conscious and sensitive to those things which change before our eyes; our sensations are boundless yet our perceptions are finite. My paintings are neither social, nor political. They are the natural response of one person expressing in form and body of sensibility, his biological destination.”

Since 1972, Sakaguchi paintings have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Japan. His resume reads like a guidebook for essential global tourism: New York, Tokyo, Philadelphia, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Jersey City. Having once lived a “tri-coastal existence” in New York, Japan and Hawaii’s Big Island, Sakaguchi now calls Volcano home with his wife Shizuno Nasu, a classically trained professional dancer whose performances often accompany her husband’s exhibitions. If anyone has insightful artistic commentary to share regarding the Earth, it is Sakaguchi.

The highly-anticipated exhibition of Earth is Born, Time of Crisis and Peace and Center of Universe will be on display at Hale Ho‘omana, Volcano Art Center’s newest multipurpose facility at their Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village <http://www.volcanoartcenter.org/about-us/niaulani> . A gallery reception and preview will be held on Sunday, June 17 from 4:00 to 6:00pm. The show will be open to the public June 18 through July 28, weekdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm and weekends by appointment.

Sizuno Nasu

CONCEPT

Spirit and Nature – the movement of wind, the stark land of Pele, the interweaving energies of opposites, yin and yang. We must heal the earth with renewed spirit and awareness of the interconnectedness of all beings and elements.

Shizuno Nasu

PROFILE

SHIZUNO NASU was born in Osaka, Japan and began her classical ballet training at age three.
She was chosen as an exchange student with the Bolshoi Ballet at age seven and made her debut as a professional dancer at age 19.
She has won high praise in France, Germany, Italy, Greece, India, South Korea, China, Japan and the U.S.
Shizuno’s quest for her own stylistic voice led her to study old Japanese mythological dances.
She undertook a multi-year pilgrimage, performing in every prefecture of Japan, and deepening within her the skill and spirit of mai, the dance.
Beyond the influence of both the West and the East, Shizuno continues to refine her unique mai, a dance attuned to the rhythms of Mother Nature.
Her most recent and successful stage production, “Pele and Poliahu” (‘09 & ‘10), showed her passion for and inspiration in movement and nature.
Shizuno says “Spirit and Nature can be seen in the movement of wind, the stark land of Pele, and the interweaving energies of opposites, yin and yang…
We must heal the earth with renewed spirit and awareness of the interconnectedness of all beings and elements.”
She currently resides in Volcano, on the Island of Hawai'i, where she continues to generate new Spiral Visions, teach dance, and aspires to bring cultures together through international cultural exchange.
